One of Britain's BEST Stately Homes

One of Robert Adam’s finest works and one of Scotland’s top architectural glories, the interior decoration at Mellerstain is simply stunning, including the Library ceiling, considered to be one of his masterpieces.

Walk in the footsteps of Adam and the Baillie family and discover for yourself a masterpiece both inside and out.

One of the Great Houses of Scotland

To this day, Mellerstain is famously celebrated as one of Robert Adam’s finest works and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful houses in the country.

enfilade

Robert Adams "enfilade" of rooms, formally aligned with each other to enhance the vista to the far end of the house.

The Library

The interior decoration is stunning, the ceilings are especially worthy of note, having been preserved in the original Adam colours. The Library is a masterpiece of Classical decoration and colour, fine detailed plasterwork incorporating marble busts by Roubiliac.

Art collections

Marvel at the perfectly proportioned rooms and the paintings which adorn their walls by Van Dyck, Ruysdael, Gainsborough, Ramsay and other Old Masters, providing a fascinating journey of Mellerstain and the Baillie family through the centuries.

Unmissable Gardens

The house is located within 100 acres of mature parkland and whether you want to enjoy a walk in the garden or picnic under an ancient tree, Mellerstain provides a magnificent backdrop and a serene location that has changed very little since the days of Adam and Grisell Baillie. Whilst the formal Italianate terraces we enjoy today were introduced a mere century ago, they are sympathetic to the original 18th century layout and the views of the gardens to the lake and the Cheviot hills beyond are quite breath taking.

Formal Gardens

The formal gardens that we enjoy today were designed in 1910 by Reginald Blomfield in an Italian style sympathetic to the 18th century layout.

Italianate Terraces

Situated to the south of the house are a series of beautiful terraces with herbaceous borders and yew trees. Steps lead via a crypto porticus to the lower terraces and a sweeping stretch of lawn descends to the lake.

Mercury

Mercury stands sentinel, one of the oldest residents here, included in the 1725 plans.

thatched cottage

Amongst the sturdy oaks and majestic beeches in the north parkland, you will find the enchanting little thatched cottage discreetly tucked away with its own enclosed parterre garden.

Dog WALKERS

Dogs are welcome in the gardens at Mellerstain.

All dogs must be kept on the lead and any dog mess cleaned up.

“I think it must have been somewhere about 1900 that I was called in by Lord Binning to transform and recondition the great house of Mellerstain, near Kelso... Lord and Lady Binning were enthusiastic on the matter of garden design, and with their help I laid out an important garden here with terraces, a crypto-porticus, parterres and water-pieces".

Memoirs of an Architect by Sir Reginald Blomfield, R.A., M.A.

"When in the early mornings and evenings the air is full
of the songs of birds and at night when the stars shine from a clear sky, I know that there is nowhere else on Earth that I would rather be than at Mellerstain."

John George Baillie-Hamilton, 13th Earl of Haddington.

Child's Play

For a great day out, Mellerstain offers wonderful lakeside and woodland walks, alongside a great play area for the kids to explore and have fun. As you will see we are blessed with an abundance of natural entertainment - you will have ample opportunity to spot the local wildlife, and to enjoy seeing our Highland cattle and Hebridean sheep!

Coffee, cake & culture

Visit the cafe in the beautiful courtyard to enjoy a delicious lunch, refreshments and freshly made cake in stylish surroundings.
