What is your favourite view?

This Adam masterpiece with its perfectly proportioned rooms and its enchanting view from the Italianate terrace mean that Mellerstain is one of the most beautiful houses imaginable. But whether its sweeping vistas, grand architectural statements, unmissable gardens or intricate details; photographers are in their absolute element here.

Your photography could win you a season pass. Please read on for more details.

As one of the truly great houses of Scotland, the setting at Mellerstain is quite stunning, as described beautifully here by the 13th Earl of Haddington.

‘Mellerstain is situated in the most perfect setting imaginable, backed onto a hillside overlooking water, and with a view (on a clear day) of the Cheviot hills in the distance. When in the early mornings and evenings the air is full of song birds, and at night when the stars shine from a clear sky, I know that there is nowhere else on Earth that I would rather be than at Mellerstain’.

Of course, everyone has their own favourite views, but we thought it would be fun to take you on a tour of the 10 views which we love, that are unmistakably Mellerstain.

The view from the South Lawn

A favourite view for many visitors is the view from the South Lawn where you can see how well the building complements the exquisite, designed landscape.

Thatched Cottage

To the north Lawn amongst the sturdy oaks and majestic beeches you will find the enchanting little thatched cottage discreetly tucked away with its own parterre garden.

Cheviot View

The view from the Italianate terraces over the lake to the Cheviot Hills is enchanting.

The Library

Regarded as one of Robert Adam’s finest creations, the interior decoration is stunning with the ceiling especially worthy of note, having been preserved in the original Adam colours. The Library is a masterpiece of Classical decoration and colour, fine detailed plasterwork incorporating marble busts by Roubiliac.

The Enfilade

Robert Adam’s ‘enfilade’ of rooms, formally aligned with each other to enhance the vista to the far end of the house.

Mercury

Mercury stands sentinel at Mellerstain, one of the oldest residents here, included in the 1725 plans.

Italianate Terraces

To the south of the house are a series of beautiful terraces with herbaceous borders and yew trees. Steps lead via a crypto porticus to the lower terraces and a sweeping stretch of lawn descends to the lake.

Our Wildlife
Favourite summer residents include the swallows, house martins and swifts while occasional bramblings, redstarts, flycatchers, garden warblers, siskins and yellowhammers are all here for you to find. Shy roe deer may be glimpsed, or a bustling badger, as well as foxes and stoats.

Wooded Glen
Enjoy a delightful amble down through the wooded Glen to the ancient wash house by the River Eden and walk round the lakeside beside the rushing weirs.

Borders Sculpture Park

Home of the Borders Sculpture Park, Mellerstain is a wonderful location for exciting artists to showcase their contemporary open air sculptures within the grounds.

Details of the 2019 Borders Sculpture Park are coming soon.
