Lesley has many strings to her bow!

As a music teacher, fluent Gaelic and French speaker, dressmaker and genealogist, there is no doubt that Tour Guide Lesley Abernethy is an absolute mine of information on a wide range of subjects, with the knowledge and passion to provide visitors with a fascinating insight into the history of Mellerstain.

When first asked about any special interests, it quickly became very clear that Lesley has many strings to her bow! Let’s start at the beginning.

When just twelve years old, Lesley clearly remembers her Granny in Yorkshire telling her stories about her own grand-mother and little did she know then, but this was to spark a lifelong interest in family history and genealogy. A passion which was to prove extremely useful in her later role here at Mellerstain and in a house with so many portraits, this skill has enabled Lesley to unravel the relationships between non-family members and family members throughout the centuries. As any visitor will tell you, Lesley is an authority on the history of the Ballie family at Mellerstain, with a particular fascination and admiration for the remarkable Lady Grisell Baillie.

Whilst originally hailing from Holmfirth in Yorkshire (famous as the location for Last of the Summer Wine), it is the village of Heiton in the Borders that Lesley calls home. After spending 30 years working as a peripatetic music teacher travelling between more than 30 schools in the region, taking it easy in retirement was never going to be an option for this inquisitive mind. Keen to learn Gaelic, Lesley was to join the Gaelic in the Borders Group and this is where she first met Mellerstain Curator Angus MacLeod Montgomery. An invitation from Angus to fill in some gaps and cover as a Tour Guide that year was to develop into a full-time role and many thousands of visitors later, Lesley is now enjoying her eighth season at Mellerstain.

When asked about favourite pieces in the house, and without any hesitation, Lesley picked out the winged Spinet in the Drawing Room, one of only twenty surviving 17th century spinets in the world today. As a former music teacher with a love of old stringed instruments, this special choice is hardly surprising, especially when you consider that Lesley’s talented husband (also a former music teacher) has built two harpsichords for Lesley to play and enjoy at home.

The second piece to be picked out is the exquisite gown in the Manchineel Room, this appreciation stems from Lesley also being a dressmaker and a member of the Borders Textile Group. It is true to say that textiles in the house can be described as a special interest, borne out by the fact that Lesley has recently purchased some curtains from eBay and fully intends to make a replica of the gown. When you look at Lesley’s considerable interests and skills to date, there is no doubting that the garment will be faithfully replicated just as soon as Lesley manages to get some spare time!

We really hope that you have enjoyed reading this introduction to Lesley and if you do have the opportunity to meet her in person at Mellerstain, be sure to ask a question or two about one of her many special interests for yourself.
