APRIL 2018

Easter on parade

As we prepare to open the House and Gardens for the Easter weekend, we thought that we would give you little preview of what’s on offer this spring and beyond here at Mellerstain.

Easter is of course a very special time of year, it also heralds the arrival of Spring and our whole team; from the Gardeners to the house staff to the Tour Guides and the team at the Hoebridge Café, are all busy making preparations to ensure that everything is ship shape and ready to welcome the first visitors of the year.

If you are entertaining friends or relatives during the Easter break or are just looking for a lovely afternoon out in the Borders, we have everything that you could wish for. As one of the finest stately homes in the country, the beauty of a visit to Mellerstain (even if the weather isn’t quite as spring like as it could be!) is that there is plenty to keep you entertained inside and out. You can step inside and marvel at the Robert Adam interiors and the exquisite collections of art, furniture and china and as you will see, the view from the house over the lake to the Cheviot Hills is quite enchanting.

As you step outside onto the Italianate terraces, you can enjoy a walk in the stunning formal gardens or explore acre upon acre of mature parkland and lakeside walks, and if we are lucky with the weather, you could even enjoy a picnic under an ancient tree. With our spring plants, bulbs and shrubs starting to bounce back into life after the winter, this is a lovely time of year to enjoy the gardens at Mellerstain. Enjoy a walk through the wooded glen around the lakeside beside the rushing weirs, and keep your eyes and ears peeled for an abundance of birds and wildlife that are also enjoying the new season too.

Something that you will not want to miss is a visit to our recently launched Hoebridge Café at Mellerstain (brought to you by the renowned Gattonside based restaurant, The Hoebridge.)

This is a locally-run family business and all food and drink is either made from scratch or sourced from the best suppliers in Scotland including Hardiesmill, Tombuie Smokehouse, Shaws Fine Meats, Teviot Smokery, Cuddybridge Apple Juice, Leftfield Kombucha, Shibui Tea and Luckie Coffee. All bread, cakes, and baked goods are baked fresh in-house. The Café is an exciting development and our visitors can now combine their visit with a lovely lunch, refreshment and home-made cake in stylish surroundings.

This Easter weekend, you can enjoy delicious homemade soups, delicious sandwiches and freshly baked cakes!
Café Open Friday – Monday, 11.00am – 4.30pm.

We hope that you have a wonderful Easter weekend and if you are out and about, we’d love to see you here at Mellerstain House and Gardens.

Happy Easter from the whole team at Mellerstain.
