A perfect blend of the old and the new

With a whole host of exciting new developments being launched at Mellerstain this year, there’s never been a better time to visit this Adam masterpiece, Operations Manager Stephen McLean tells you why.

One of the lovely things about a visit to Mellerstain is the fact that this great house never changes! You can literally walk in the footsteps of Adam and the Baillie family and discover for yourself a masterpiece both inside and out. And whilst the beauty of a visit to Mellerstain is that the house has changed very little over the centuries, we are proud that we are able to make improvements to make your visit even more enjoyable and rewarding.

The whole team have been working hard really over the winter to introduce some lovely new features which will undoubtedly enhance your experience this year and beyond, ensuring that this remains a special place that you will want to return to time and time again.

Fresh flowers

At the end of last season, our new Gardener Daryl was busy planting a wide variety of new plants and these will burst into life in the gardens this spring and summer. The new plant varieties are all distinct and unique and will bring gorgeous new colour throughout our gardens in the changing seasons.

You’ll also have even more opportunity to take a piece of Mellerstain home with you as we’re expanding our selection of plant sales, all grown and cultivated here. We’ve enlarged the number and variety of plants for sale in our courtyard to accommodate our green fingered visitors.

Woodland Walk

Mellerstain is located in hundreds of acres of mature parkland and ancient woodland. With so much magnificent outdoor space to explore, we are delighted to introduce a spectacular new circular Woodland Walk in 2019. The project has been led by our Head of Grounds and Gardens Jason and the walk means that you can now fully explore the grounds without having to go onto the road at all. The walk is partially accessible for certain types of wheelchair and buggy users, please see our website for further information on accessibility.

The new Woodland Walk provides an easy 1 kilometre route with interesting plants, trees and other flora along the way while also linking with the wider path network. It’s the perfect addition to help you to explore the wooded glen and the beautiful picnic areas by the Eden Water and the lakeside beside the rushing weirs.

Wild Weekends – Fun for all the family

A new series of Wild Weekend events will feature tomahawk throwing, tree climbing, archery and air rifles in the grounds of Mellerstain. There’s something for all the family as the event includes also includes access to Mellerstain House.

The Wild Weekends are set to give children, parents and grandparents an amazing experience in the great outdoors. The Wild Weekends, run by the Wild Outdoors Company, take place on Monday 6 May, Sunday 9 June and Friday 26 July 2019.

Parents and Grandparents are being encouraged to bring the kids along for a fantastic day out. Special tickets mean that not only everyone can give the outdoor activities a go, but any parents or grandparents who would like to see the amazing Adam-designed interiors of Mellerstain can do so while the kids are entertained.

Booking details and further information are available here.

Busy bees

Amongst the sturdy oaks and majestic beeches in the north parkland, you will find the enchanting little Thatched Cottage discreetly tucked away with its own enclosed parterre garden.

New this year, we’ve created a ‘wildlife garden’ with its very own pond, plants and beehives, to encourage a wide range of insect, bird and animal species. We are delighted to provide a new habitat where bees, butterflies, birds and wildlife will thrive.

Music to our ears

The Borders Music & Arts Society is returning with its series of classical concerts in the Mellerstain music room. Visitors can enjoy a series of concerts running from May to September 2019 from a selection of outstanding musicians.

Further information is available here.

Tasty Treats

New for 2019 we are introducing the Ghillie Café. Visit the beautiful courtyard to enjoy a delicious lunch, refreshments and freshly made cake in stylish surroundings.

The tasty treats and warm welcome in the Café are provided by our local partners the Tipsy Ghillie Bar, Wine Café & Bistro based in Kelso.

Borders Sculpture Park 2019

From its beginnings, Mellerstain has been steeped in art and architecture. It is fitting that the family continue to champion this love of the arts by hosting the Borders Sculpture Park at Mellerstain.

As well a special launch event for this year’s Borders Sculpture Park, there’s certainly plenty to look forward to this year. The special installations will arrive in Summer with a special event to celebrate the 2019 opening of the Borders Sculpture Park. We’ll share details with you soon!

We also look forward to welcoming you to Mellerstain and to introducing you to these lovely new additions in person.
