steps to the lower TerraceIn 1909, the distinguished garden architect Sir Reginald Blomfield was commissioned to lay out a new garden at Mellerstain.

He altered and enlarged the lake (originally designed in the form of a Dutch canal, after George Baillie's return from exile in Holland many years before), and created the terraces that connect the House with the long sweep of lawn that cascades to the water's edge.

terraced gardens at MellerstainFortunately his Renaissance style is perfectly in keeping with Adam's House, and the terraces, with their profusion of roses, make an idyllic setting for a wedding ceremony or garden-party style evening's entertainment. Your guests can emerge from the lower level of the House (the gallery area) and spill out onto the Upper Terrace to enjoy the magnificent views.
