2010 CONCERT PROGRAMME
THURSDAY 22ND APRIL
Trio Ecossaise
JENNIFER BROWN – Clarinet HARRIET DAVIDSON – Cello CLAIRE HASLIN – Piano
Since their formation in 2001 Trio Ecossaise has performed extensively throughout Scotland. In addition to their chamber music commitments, they each pursue busy and diverse freelance careers within the United Kingdom and Europe.
All three musicians hail from Scotland and were trained at - the Royal Northern College of Music and Indiana University (Jennifer), Oxford University and the Guildhall School of Music (Harriet) and the Royal Scottish Academy and the Guildhall School of Music (Claire).
Their programme includes the wonderful Brahms Trio in A minor Op.114 and works by Beethoven, Bloch and Muczynski.
THURSDAY 27TH MAY
MATTHEW FEATHERSTONE – Flute PHILIP SHANNON - Piano
Matthew Featherstone is a recipient of the 2010 Countess of Munster Recital Scheme. The Scheme provides professional performance opportunities for the most outstanding of the Trust’s beneficiaries, who in the opinion of the Trust are on the threshold of first class careers on the concert platform. Matthew studied flute from the age of six at the Orleans Conservatoire, and later at the Guildhall School of Music where he graduated with distinction. He recently won Gold Medal in the Marlow Concerto Competition and the British Flute Society Award.
Phillip Shannon is an established accompanist having studied at the Guildhall School of Music under Paul Hamburger. He is very active in this capacity including repetiteur with English National Opera, broadcaster on Radio 3 with the violinist Leo Payne, as pianist for both the London Symphony and London Philharmonic Orchestras and continuo player with the London Mozart Players.
Their programme includes works by Faure, Franck, Messiaen, C.P.E Bach, Poulenc and Prokofiev.
THURSDAY 24TH JUNE
A Summer Schubertiade
The Robert Adam Ensemble
A Schubertiade is a social gathering whose primary purpose is the performance of music by Schubert and what could be more appropriate than a recital by the Robert Adam Ensemble in the Music Room of one of the architect’s finest houses.
The Robert Adam Ensemble is a quintet of musicians who are all members of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, comprising, violin, viola, violoncello, double base and piano.
The cornerstone of the evening’s music will be Schubert’s celebrated Trout Quintet, supported by a range of other works by the great composer.
The evening will begin at 7pm with drinks and canapés in the Oval Hall, followed by the concert in the Music Room and supper in the Yellow Room.
THURSDAY 23RD SEPTEMBER
SIMON LANE – Piano BECKY JONES – Viola KARINA LUCAS – Mezzo Soprano
This concert combines piano, string and voice and we are delighted to have a return visit of the mezzo soprano Karina Lucas, following her charming recital last season. Simon and Karina are joined by Rebecca Jones who is a member of the Callino String Quartet and performs extensively at home and abroad. Simon Lane needs little introduction as he has given several outstanding recitals at Mellerstain, always delighting the audience with his polished performance and real partnership with soloists.
Their programme covers a wide range of musical genres, including Brahms Zwei Gesange for voice, viola and piano, Brahms Sonata for viola and piano in F minor and other works including Bridge and Loeffler.
THURSDAY 21ST OCTOBER
London Bridge Piano Trio
BENJAMIN NABARRO – Violin KATE GOULD – Cello DANIEL TONG – Piano
The Piano Trio of the London Bridge Ensemble return to Mellerstain following their memorable concert last season. Since making its Wigmore Hall debut in 2005, the ensemble has established itself as one of Britain’s most exiting chamber groups and we are very pleased to have secured a return visit from these outstanding musicians.
The concert includes two major works for piano, violin and cello; Brahms bravura Piano Trio in B major op.9 and Beethoven’s wonderful Piano Trio no.2 in G major. The programme also includes music by Haydn.

CHRISTMAS PARTY
ST MARY’S MUSIC SCHOOL
Last season’s Christmas Party was a most successful event much enjoyed by all who attended. We have decided to repeat the format of the evening as a special event with a festive atmosphere.
St Mary’s Music School is Scotland’s independent specialist music school and the choir school for St Mary’s Cathedral. The school’s young musicians will provide a varied programme including some Christmas music, to bring our 2010 season to an enjoyable end.
The evening will begin at 7.00pm with drinks and canapés in the Oval Hall, followed by the concert in the Music Room and Supper in the Yellow Room.
Dress: Black Tie
